Nancy J. Young – Artist Statement
Having a degree in geology plus a broad background in archaeology and anthropology have constantly fueled my interest in earlier civilizations. Over thirty-five years have been spent visiting remote areas in this and other countries gathering impressions of past and present cultures. These impressions seem to roll around in my subconscious and gradually resurface as contemporary archetypal works.
The structure for my pieces is from cotton fiber pulp that is pressed into original molds creating paper casts. Various applications of finely ground metals and patinas are used on the castings to create mixed media works that are contemporary in flavor while having the patina of antiquity. The resulting three dimensional pieces have the subtly elegant appearance of aged metal while reflecting impressions of time immemorial.
My hope is that the viewer will react to my work from his or her past experiences and will enjoy it from their point of view. What was felt when creating the piece will be different from the viewer’s prospective, but shared responses, whether positive or negative, will link the viewer and the artist through the piece.
