Eun Kyung Suh – Artist Statement

Unquestionably, nature provides artists with the greatest source of inspiration and spirit. Artists have adopted nature as both subject matter and catalyst of the imagination. Some artists are devoted to capturing the beauty and depicting nature realistically while others endeavor to observe and analyze the outward shapes and the inner structures of nature and apply them to their artwork. My current work is also influenced by nature, and more specifically, the defense mechanisms of creatures.

The variety of protective adaptations animals have developed purely for survival such as cover and concealment, camouflage and disguise, warning signals, bluffs and threats, groups and coalitions and fight or flight, inform my work. I have been developing the form of my design to incorporate these concepts into art works, mimicking the quills of porcupines or the thorns of cantus. These works are aggressive, taking the offensive. They signify attacking and intimidating and are designed to evoke such warning signals as “Stay away,” “Danger,” or “Do not fool with me.”
