Peter Schlee– Artist Statement After a twenty year hiatus from woodworking, I was pleased to be paired up with Tom Kerrigan for this exhibit. Visiting his studio, I was impressed with the sensuous curves of his recent work. It was an easy decision that my part in this piece should reflect these voluptuous curves. Hence, a coopered door and other curvaceous elements in the piece. I love the way Tom’s playful ceramic nymphs integrate into the wood, as if it is emerging from within. The wood is alder. Alder has a magnificent silkiness. The surfaces are finished with hand tools. I like to avoid the use of sandpaper whenever possible. You will see much evidence of these tools, as I do not sand the small “imperfections” away. In fact, much of the wood is smoothed with a Stanley hand plane that belonged to my Grandfather. I think he is my original inspiration to become a woodworker. I spent many hours as a child in his basement shop in Detroit, amongst the wonder of his woodworking tools and inhaling the smell of sawdust and varnish. Resume Education
