Renee Prisble Una – Artist Statement

My work explores personal experience, feeling and observation through materials that are appropriate to each expression. In my work I distill the observed into minimal forms of sculpture and installation created from only essential elements. My work is not about creating; but about noticing, focusing and distilling relationships.

Creating this encaustic series drew on my interest in the body and skin, which are reoccurring elements in my work in sculpture and installation. The use of wax to explore the body and skin was inspired by the anatomical waxes of Museo La Specola in Florence as published in Encyclopedia Anatomica. The circle format references petri dishes and microscopic imagery. This series of medically influenced encaustics explore the anatomy and my experience using both the graceful and the grotesque.
