Anne Drew Potter– Artist Statement
Despite a dim awareness of our own subjectivity, the individual reality that belongs to each of us is experienced as concrete and self-evident. I am interested in the moment when the self-evidence of our own experiences is challenged by confrontation with the other, the infinity of realities that exist outside of our own.
I make performative objects that address the ways in which social meaning is projected onto the forms of the body. I incorporate a background in anatomy and an understanding of the physical gender stereotypes that inform our mental constructions of the human body to create unsettling and ambiguous personalities. These forms are intended to question our binary understanding of gender and the interaction of the gendered body with other identity characteristics such as age, ability, and race. I manipulate physiological signifiers of gender, race, age, and other identity characteristics to encourage viewers to confront their feelings about normalcy, difference, and what defines human. By creating a tension between the intellectual reality of the static object and the emotional drama of exaggerated expressions I hope to recall the type of self-consciousness and artifice that are present both in formal theatre/cinema and in our everyday constructions of our selves.
The social critique of the objects I make is directed away from righteousness but toward uncomfortable truth; how do we acknowledge and accept the humanity of human evil. I am ultimately interested in the complex and contradictory nature of the human experience.
