Cory Peeke– Artist Statement

A great deal of research and artwork has been done on the subject of the objectification of the female form in art. However, very little attention has been paid to the objectification and idealization of male beauty in art and visual culture. From the classical Greek canon of body proportions, through Dr. William Herbert Sheldon’s Varieties of Human Physiques published in the 1960’s, to the present day’s conception of the “metro-sexual” and amateur internet porn we have seen a cultural standard put forth by society to define ideas of masculinity, male sexuality and the ideal masculine form.

With my two latest series of collages, those of the Polaroid and Wallflower series’, I have begun juxtaposing appropriated images acquired from found photography, art historical masterworks, vintage illustration, wallpaper, and the Internet with one another to explore the physical manifestations of masculinity and their relationship to sexual identity. The pieces investigate how we perceive and react to the dualities embodied in representations of the male form: the ideal and the familiar, the historical and the contemporary, the religious and the erotic, the decorative and the repulsive, the animal and the human, the serious and the amusing, and the naked and the nude. They also question the role visual images play in the way we view and interact with images of queer men across the thread of time.

This inquiry along with my affection for the discarded imagery of our daily existence drives the collage works. It also allows me to continue my exploration of the continuity of identity construction on both a cultural and personal level.
