Paula Roland – Artist Statement

Because of the fluid nature of the wax I am forced to react and invent on the spot. Working in wax is much like expression in other intuitive art forms such as jazz or improvisational dance. This way of working allows avenues of discovery that can’t be accessed through the cognitive mind. The fluidity of the wax requires a letting go, while remaining mindful.

The Diptych Project has been both challenging and stimulating. The challenge comes in receiving a beautiful, completed painting from my partner, Charyl Weissbach, and attempting to extend and compliment her idea. My solution (after many attempts) was to use related colors in a close up view of what I imagined I could see if I could fly into the space of Charyl’s painting. My panel consists of an encaustic monotype, sealed in wax, of ground debris in colors relating to her painting.

I hope the two panels “read” as one work, with each reflecting and encouraging a deeper consideration of the other, and the whole.
