Nancy
Richards Davis - Artist Statement
I am an abstract artist with an emphasis on the encaustic process. I find the encaustic medium one that resonates a dialogue between the painting and the artist. Through the layering of pigmented beeswax and oil, I articulate a continual journey that seeks to reveal an idea, a memory, a feeling.
In Shadow Wisdom, a series that has come out of my reflections on aging, I am reassessing my place and value as a mature woman in a society which denigrates the aged and celebrates only youth . I began to think of older women as Aging Goddesses who redefine beauty with spiritual strength , confidence and wisdom.
The prehistoric Venus of Willendorf , circa 20,000 BCE ,with her mysterious, full bodied figure, takes on new meaning as a woman who has replaced the biology of the womb with the creativity of the heart, mind and soul. The Egyptian Goddess, Isis, worshipped as the archetypal wife and mother, speaks about the nurturing aspects of my life as a mother, wife, teacher, grandmother and caregiver.
The paintings have a strong dark and light composition, bridged with passages of more subtle colors just as life is informed by both the shadows and the light.
