Monika Dalkin – Artist Statement

The work I make is a personal journal. I have come to this place out of quiet contemplation and process, working intuitively without preconceived outcomes. The process is that of action and reaction. I very rarely have sketches from which to work and a conscious effort is made to be very present while working and responding to the moment.

I am drawn to the manipulation of objects and repetitive activities. I accept non-traditional materials and try to remember that there are no rigid formulas to follow. The visual and physical repetition allows me to be endlessly creative and creatively eclectic. A sense of order and pace is achieved through the use of color, repetitive elements, grids and elemental shapes. Surface texture adds visual interest and dimension. The final product is complete when it no longer demands anything from me.
