Doing Time

Molly Geissman– Artist Statement

DOING TIME started as a purely selfish, creative outlet to what seemed an intolerable passage of time and isolation for me. It brought back childhood memories of a place we passed every Saturday on our way west to Ann Arbor, a state mental hospital we lovingly called Eloise, “the nut house.” The stately buildings and beautiful lawns with picnic tables were in stark contrast to the frightfully pointed iron bars which surrounded the place. On nice days the patients were outside as we passed by, often standing with their faces pushed up to the bars, seemingly inches from us, as the fence ran along Michigan Avenue. Even as a little kid, I knew it was a lot better to be spending time at a college football game than at Eloise, even if they had a swing. This series of work has continued to be an exploration into what I like to refer to as situation incarceration.

In general, I am fascinated by organic line and marks made by the “soul of the hand.” Therefore, I do not plan out my paintings and aspire to communicate that kind of energy and passion to the viewer because that is what I find most precious about art.
