Mireille Vautier- Artist Statement
The human body is my main source of inspiration. Its inside and outside, its wounds and its vivid memory. Skeleton, organs : ex-votos, precious jewelry protected by the skin which is in turn protected by clothing. Clothings, the body’s covering. The human
body is relic, a base for work dealing with memory. I try to recover and relate said memory.
My most recent work has been embroidery on fabric or plastic. To embroider is for me a means of reflecting on memory, such as families’ memories (like embroidered initials on cotton sheets). Wrapped bodies in the sheets impress their whole lives on fabric. Embroidery always, but on an other support : plastic. Used plastic bags, long tubular nets. These modest daily objects, non-biodegradable, are becoming useless. I take them and try with embroidering to give them a nobility.
I use often a red thread. This choice is instinctive. Red is powerful. In « Embroidered textiles », Sheila Paine writes : «It is the blood of the life and of the death ». She writes also that red is used in many countries in two different ways : to protect and to mark.
The red color is for me like a talisman and a signature.
To embroider is also a commentary on time, it is an anachronistic and inconceivable thing in today’s world where taking one’s time is a luxury. It is going against the grain, asserting the nessecity of slowing things down in order to look at them.
