Kim Matthews – Artist Statement My sculpture challenges both traditional definitions of “legitimate” sculptural media and the craft tradition from which emerged contemporary paper art. Although I might be allied with others working in paper and fiber, I do not define myself according to choice of primary medium, just as a watercolorist does not consider him- or herself a “paper artist” but a painter. Asian art and spirituality are two major influences in my work. A process orientation and frequent evocation of natural cycles of birth, growth, death and decay are rooted in my Vedic-tradition meditation practice as well a love of Eastern aesthetics. I frequently use traditional Japanese papermaking fibers and techniques alongside contemporary tools and industrial materials. Two works shown in this exhibition, MMY and He and She, are typical organic constructions made with flexible reed or wire armatures covered with overbeaten papermaking fibers. The third work, Fragment, is representative of a more recent approach utilizing repeated forms, in this case coils of paper cord. My current body of work is very much in the postminimalist vein, using numerous handmade, idiosyncratic components to create a meditative rhythm suggestive of the working process itself.
