Marybeth Rothman – Artist Statement

My collection of orphaned photographs is the catalyst for my encaustic mixed media paintings. I am intrigued by the conflicting, reciprocal, and parallel relationships of people, objects and environment created by the click of the shutter. I deconstruct photographic imagery through a fusion of encaustic paint and a vocabulary of drawings, marks and color. This many layered process makes all imbedded material integral to the encaustic structure as well as creating a visual depth that is unique to this medium. The interplay of opacity and translucency in my paintings is also an essential element in revealing the story that I have found.
