Marybeth Rothman – Artist Statement
My work is a journal of human contact about strangers, centered about a juxtaposition of the foreign figure with an abstract form or other echoing counterpart. These disparate images both inform and catalyze one another, engendering an evocative dialogue sometimes between the animate and inanimate, the part and the whole and the far and the foreign. In sum, these works are a dialectic of the human condition that reflects our connection with ourselves and the other.
The paintings from the series Juxta are a fusion of drawings, encaustic monotype and photographs in many translucent layers of molten wax. The paintings in this series are connected by a narrative that unravels a fleeting moment, defined by time and circumstance.
