Mary Ellen Neff – Artist Statement

I have a great affection for the outdoors, and look both East and West for inspiration. Western influences come from rock formations, fossils and life forces in the American West.

Some times I incorporate oil pastels or carve with various tools for linear effects. Sparingly, I use oil paints for opacity, but I try to allow the wax itself, lightly colored by dry pigments, deliver a soft glow. I love the process of manipulating wax, and love how it interacts with the wood grain beneath. It is a happy exploration, limited only by the imagination.
