Martina Shenal – Artist Statement

Index Series

This series developed out of my recent relocation in an effort to connect to new and unfamiliar surroundings. Originally conceived of as a series of sketches using disparate source material, the initial goal was to develop a daily studio practice by recording things just outside my studio window using the scanner as my camera. These images share similar aesthetic concerns with my previous body of work in their narrow, often shifting focal point within an isolating, nebulous ground.

In choosing organic matter and references to the natural world, I began with the ephemeral– recording at the height of beauty and again, after the fall. The title of this series points to the indexical nature of my process– serving as a reference guide with the hope of revealing something new, a sign. This attention to the cyclical nature of organic processes parallels an awareness of my own animate existence.
