Mari Marks – Artist Statement
I am interested in deep structures of the earth’s creation, change and renewal.
In the Sedimentary Series I utilize graphite, earth sediments, or other sedimentary materials on a ground of beeswax, natural or pigmented. The beeswax layer is applied over non-reactive paper mounted with conservators glue on wood panel. A second layer (or more) of pigmented wax is then applied. The beeswax ground may be smooth, etched or built up of many layers of pigmented wax. Graphite or sediments are applied to the beeswax by brush, rubbing, or in solvent.
In the Sedimentary Series, Terra, I engrave a repeated rhythmic pattern derived from nature or from pen strokes in the nature drawings of Vincent Van Gogh. A graphite or other sedimentary layer is evenly applied then wiped as in a print. A heat lamp is used to fix the sedimentary materials in the currents of the subtly heated wax layers.
In the Sediments and Circles an even coating of graphite or other sedimentary materials is laid over the beeswax. A heat lamp held in a fixed position heats the wax until the wax is melted causing the sedimentary layer to flow in the currents, mixing with underlying layers, moving to the outside rim of the boiling area—as in a volcano. When the heat is removed, the graphite follows the cooling edge and is deposited according to underlying fluid dynamics.
