Margaret Suchland – Artist Statement

The found object, printed ephemera and other of life’s artifacts have always been of interest to me. My inspiration comes from the effects of time and use found on these everyday relics; the random marks, specks and smudges; the worn edges and discolorations - these are all subtle traces of past human presence. They portray a passing of time - a presence of an absence. I have tried to capture the essence of these effects in my paintings.

My recent works are from an on-going series called “Signs & Symbols.” The word “sign” is defined as: effect, symbol, ghost, token, telltale, mark - all of these words describe the intention of the work to portray the brief, yet lingering evidence of human existence.

I consider all my work as experiments. Involvement in this experimentation and in the processes of my work are important to me; the act of trusting an idea, caring for it, seeing it through and then letting it have a life of its own.
