Lynette Haggard - Artist Statement
My work is a pursuit of balance between the intuitive and the structured, tangible and the familiar, and the surprises that happen along the way.
As I work, I may be guided by a thought, perhaps an idea, a sensory cue, memory or emotional response. The painting process can be both additive and subtractive (painting, adding paper, found objects, painting with wax, fusing, embedding and introducing other materials, or removing material by scraping or sanding.)
Using these multiple approaches, I am able to create movement and history of marks while working within the formal constraints of the edges of the canvas or panel. The result is an exploration of the process and the relationships of the surface I am creating. The paintings incorporate juxtaposition and various associations between the areas of activity on the surface. Often it happens that an edge, a mark, a color, a drip, a stroke, or an added material will define the tactile activity within the space and surface. The results are intimate explorations, associations and a history through layering.
