Lucinda Young – Artist Statement

Embarquemos (Variations Apply)

This new body of work is, to some significant degree, a meditation on time, transition and story, on my mother’s final passage and the shifting relationship between identity, imagination and memory.

As in several previous bodies of work, many of the pieces contain references to trees, roots and branches – a stand in for the “self,” I suppose, and also an associative invocation of The Tree of Life, The Tree of Knowledge, The Family Tree, The Witness. In this series, sometimes entangled, sometimes free floating, are numerous images of boats, and submerged references to boat building and boat designs, actual, mythic and archeological. The boat, too, is a recurring image, both as form and function, in my work. It is obviously a metaphor for exploration, arrival and departure, also the “vessel” invoked by the gothic church nave, and the form of the inverted rib cage. In many spiritual and indigenous cultures, water is both the genesis of life and the conduit to the underworld, and the symbol of the boat invokes not only the life journey towards full identity, but also and more specifically the initiation and the conclusion of that journey.

As my mother’s memory fades, as she awaits the call of the boatman, the seminal story she recalls and holds close, the story that carries her identity and that she will carry with her, is an actual story of a boat voyage that symbolized a radical departure and declaration of independence. That journey inaugurated the life she dared to dream. and carries, now, her sense of an essential self, a self she carries with pride to her final embarkation, a self largely set free of the specific details of autobiography

Living in the desert as I do, I’m also fascinated by the daily realization that this most arid of topographies can only exist where there was once ocean, and the limestone and granite that hold fast my house hold ancient stories of marine evolution and tidal change. Technically speaking, in addition to my customary use of burned in and buried drawings and encaustic in combination with dry pigments, ground glass and marble dust, I have experimented with adding sea salt. Interestingly, salt, like beeswax, is a preservative: Clearly, it also references both ocean, the source of life itself, and the human body, leeches while drawing one color to another, and creating encrusted barriers and ebb marks.
