Lucinda Young – Artist Statement

A knot is a link, both connection and constraint, in 3-dimensional space. This body of work, K/nots (Of Desire), was initially inspired by the visual impact of the knotted root forms in a grove of sacred Banyan trees in Hawaii - traditionally an ancient burial ground, nuptial pavilion and site of initiation ceremonies. These extraordinary natural forms, coiling and looping across acres and centuries, connecting one tree to the body of another, were infinitely mysterious and utterly beautiful.

Given my ongoing interest in ideas about creation, inter-connection and materiality, and a fascination with the intrinsic elegance of mathematical equations and theoretical physics, the knot form's significance in Quantum Physics and Molecular Biology became one of several intriguing subtexts. Other associations include nautical knots and the history of exploration, the multiple forms of sacred knot that occur in much religious iconography and the knot as an expression of agreement and obligation in early forms of contractual communication, like the Inca Quipui cords. The "knot" continues to be implicit in Binary Code, the underlying language of the internet.

The knot is a form in which one or more entities meet, connect, snarl or hold tight, a place of tension, suspension, hiatus or release. Living as I do, in the American southwest, a landscape bounded by barbed wire, I am also made daily aware of the complex ambiguity of the knot as a manifestation of boundary, freedom, possession and restraint.
