Mary Ellen Long – Artist Statement

Encyclopedia IV (part of a series of book sculptures) evolved with my work concerning the concept of the open book...knowledge being open to all viewers of the traditional book page. This book, recycled from an old encyclopedia...wrapped and covered with handmade paper, makes a statement about closure, censorship, and the soon-to-be lost culture of the book form to spread knowledge. The split paper-covered sphere symbolizes the world of readers, in transition between the traditional book culture and the digital age.
