Lois Epperson Gale- Artist Statement
My interests lie in the natural world and particularly in the complex structures and functions of the human body. In my work I explore how our wellbeing is related to our actions, non-actions, and the health of our environment.
I contemplate change and states of being: stagnation, transformation, flux, motion, regeneration, decay, disintegration, and preservation. I examine dualities and coexisting oppositions: micro and macro, deficiency and excess, repulsion and attraction, balance and imbalance, perfection and imperfection, control and chaos, fragility and strength, hope and despair, seen and unseen, interest and apathy, illness and wellness. I search for the spaces in between extremes.
For this series, Lacuna (Plastic Zone), I began collecting plastic that was destined for the landfill. I had previously read about the plastic islands in the sea, as well as the relationships between continuous small exposures to synthetic particles and human health.
I found myself preoccupied with saving all of the plastic from my consumption habits. I began tearing the pliant material and crafting the sheets, as one would a basket, into cocoons, structures for erythrocytes, breeding healthy cells within a repurposed plastic landscape. The constant reuse allays my guilt while the obsessive stitching allows me to think with my hands.
