Lois Epperson Gale – Artist Statement

My work considers psychological, physical, and spiritual responses to external stimuli. It is a persistent contemplation, inspection, and exploration of nature, organic processes, the body, and temporal physicality. The objects created are derived from both real and invented landscapes. History, memory, experience, and obsessions become forms with multiplicity and repetition.

I ponder change and states of being: stagnation, transformation, flux, motion, regeneration, decay, disintegration, and preservation. Duality. Contradictions existing at once: micro and macro, deficiency and excess, repulsion and attraction, balance and imbalance, perfection and imperfection, control and lack thereof. I search for the spaces in between the extremes.

The materials used are varied, determined by what a particular piece necessitates. I use but do not limit myself to encaustic, oil, metal, wood, found objects, and photographs. My interaction with these substances creates an environment where I am able to think with my hands.
