Epperson-Gale - Artist Statement
This work is part of a new series titled It’s all Connected. I continue to explore the internal body, its structures and functions, and the temporal nature of things. I am consistently searching for different ways of working which will enable me to see the same things in a new way. While looking at cross sections of parts of anatomy, I was compelled to also somehow make some of the sections whole again.
I am interested in the relationships between cellular changes in response to environmental factors and consciousness rather than simply genetics. The three dimensional pieces are cast in encaustic, a substance whose longevity rests on the environment it exists within. I utilized found, rusted sheet metal as the substrate. The way the rust had formed on the metal reminded me of microscopic cellular images I have been examining. The metal surface grows, moves, and changes depending on environmental factors, not unlike cellular changes and responses in the body.
