Lissa Rankin - Artist Statement When I first began painting this series, my life was in flux. Losing my father, giving birth to my daughter, and trying to balance a full-time OB/GYN practice with a blossoming art career left me spinning. The conflicts that arose were projected, unconsciously, through my art. What emerged was a series that challenged the status quo in my art practice. Egg-like circles were pulled together, as if by gravity, while being simultaneously drawn apart, weightless. Etched lines created a dynamic push and pull. Shocking reds commingled with blacks and whites, in sharp contrast to the neutral backgrounds. Each piece represents the issue of conflict and resolution, reflecting what is happening in my life. As I’ve begun to face these recent life changes, I’ve started to paint very intuitively from a spiritual place; painting without conscious thought. Working with encaustic paint lends itself to intuitive painting, spontaneity and controlled accidents. Fluid pours of hot wax meld to create abstract shapes over geometric grids. Organic abstractions with egg-like ovals, plant-like curves, and serpentine lines evoke the beginnings of life. Resume Education
