Lin Fife– Artist Statement

“INITIATION MANUAL” is part of a large series of work motivated by my travels and research in Australia. The sacred objects and designs used in traditional Aboriginal initiation ceremonies fascinated me, particularly the tjuringa, flat oval boards incised with arcane symbols.

Since my own culture had not provided me with corresponding rituals, I began to create objects and books on the topic of self-initiation, utilizing materials and memorabilia garnered during my Australian odysseys. This driftwood oval washed up on a beach on Kangaroo Island, the background paper uses soil from a cave in the Kimberleys, and blank pages create a “journal” onto which my awe was stitched.
