Kim Bernard - Artist Statement
The process of beginning with nothing but a vague idea and seeing that idea materialize as a painting or sculpture, which communicates through visual language, provokes me. I approach each piece without preconceived ideas, allowing the forms to develop. I remain in the present, alert for images to reveal themselves. Working with the infinitely forgiving medium of wax, I layer, burn, scrape, embed and transfer. Often implementing contrasting materials, like encaustic and lead, I am intrigued by the rapport, whether it contrasts, harmonizes, opposes or compliments. Dividing the surface into compartments fosters a dialogue among the elements. Those elements that speak to me remain, while those that do not are removed.
