Kelly Wagner-Steinke- Artist Statement

In my encaustic work of the series, entitled Umbria, I investigate ideas of light, shadow, and movement. This is created by a repetition of forms juxtaposed, sometimes unexpectedly, to evoke a soft space wherein there is air and light. Shadows seen from different angles allude to various combinations of changing shapes, creating movement in the work.

My interest in art history and ancient cultures led me to create pyramid structures, which, for the Egyptians, were symbols of strength and permanence. When light is cast upon the angular forms, a different perspective is achieved, drawing attention away from the permanent to the transient.

I invite elements of chance and uncertainty into my media and processes. My works are the result of inventive experiments - building up and taking out - to evoke harmony and tension, fragility and permanence, structure and freedom, shadow and light.

I am intrigued with ideas of paradox - with contradictions, mysteries, the tension of opposites, ambiguities and truths. Creating juxtapositions that are at times disorienting, playful, and unexpected, I engage with the uncertain, challenging assumptions of meaning in art.
