Katie Holly - Artist Statement

I studied sculpting and am drawn to the physicality of sculpture. I used the same methods when I began painting. I use a trowel to apply a plaster-based absorbent ground and use sponges to apply oil pigments and to smooth the surface. This approach forces me to work and rework the surface, obscuring and revealing the multiple layers in order to achieve the refinement that I desire. The resulting paintings often convey an antiquity like old patterned wall-paper or a landscape seen through a fog.

This new body of work comes on the heels of an exploration of more traditional painting, and a desire to control it more intensely. These new pieces are fastidiously laid up in strict geometric patterns where the primary focuses are the colors and their relation to each other.
