Katie Holly - Artist Statement

I studied sculpting and am drawn to the physicality of sculpture. I used the same methods when I began painting. I use a trowel to apply a plaster-based absorbent ground and use sponges to apply oil pigments and to smooth the surface. This approach forces me to work and rework the surface, obscuring and revealing the multiple layers in order to achieve the refinement that I desire. I finish the paintings with a wax-based glaze.

This new body of work comes on the heels of an exploration of more traditional painting, and a desire to control it more intensely. These new pieces are based on visual memories of utilitarian structures and landscapes.
