Sandee Johnson – Artist Statement "Time Warp" consists of nothing more than paper pulp, paper photocopies, ephemera, and recycled materials plus a plywood backing that conforms to the molded shape. It began with pulp made from trashed paper pressed into a hand made mold. After that I embellished the surface with extra incising and extensions of pulp. Collage material was attached with extra heavy gel medium and then acrylic paints and other mediums tied all the details together in a 3-D creation that can be hung on the wall. Collage art continues to intrigue me like no other mixed techniques. It can be used in serious, intellectual work as well as humorous, frivolous expressions. As a therapist in a psychiatric ward, I often used collage as a method to free a patient from personal withdrawal. There is a definite therapeutic usage of collage as each image or added layer of texture may have a link with your own life and history. As for myself, traveling in over 83 countries and moving almost 30 times, my collection of ephemera threatens to bury me alive. My studio is filled with materials ranging from bought and handmade paper to strange objects from junkyards. I've been known to pick up things from the street, flea markets, the beach, anywhere. Friends sometimes contact me before they throw something away. There are no finite defined rules for collage but the use of multiple layers fills the need to explore other dimensions. The early founders of collage techniques would be profoundly pleased with all the many directions that their offspring have grown. Resume Education
