Jisun Kang

Jisun Kang- Artist Statement

My work is based on the traditional Korean painting style known as ‘MINHWA,’ which existed in Joseon Dynasty era. Traditional Minhwa paintings were all painted by unknown artists near the end of, or after the Chosun period (1392~1910). These folk paintings are infused throughout ordinary life often as decorative patterns in interiors, partitions, doors, wallpaper and more. My work begins as paintings and are then adapted to textile and interior design applications. As a Korean living in Japan, this form serves as a means to explore my identity and nationality.
