Jennifer
Beth Guerin – Artist Statement
felt n.
A kind of cloth or stuff made of wool, or of wool and fur or hair, fulled
or wrought into a compact substance by rolling and pressure, with lees
or size—vi. To become matted together. felt pt. and pp. of feel.
“Your
daughter has beautiful hair”… “I know, but we can’t
do anything with it.” My earliest memories of searching for my
favorite cereal in the grocery aisle, of swinging high enough for my
feet to touch the clouds, or retrieving my older siblings from school
are woven with feelings of praise and scorn. I was often curious as
to why my red, unruly curls warranted so much attention; and, at the
same time, I was preoccupied with mending my appearance to ward off
my mother’s frustration. An internal fabric stretched taut through
years of approach/pressure/reproach became my filter for seeing--signifying
a continuum of felt experience.
I investigate
the territory of my personal experience in order to communicate specific
feelings and events. I want to understand, come to terms with, and take
responsibility for my most vulnerable self. This conceptual framework
leads me in a variety of directions: performance, video, installation,
sculpture, and mixed media. My job, then, is to utilize appropriate
materials, transform them, and provide entrance into my internal landscape,
hopefully suggesting ways in which others might access their own emotional
environments. Ultimately, I want to present an authentic experience
that allows a viewer permission to touch their feelings of approach/pressure/reproach.
I believe
all of us navigate through psychologically and emotionally loaded moments;
and (sometimes) we allow specific threads to unravel, to be seen, in
an effort to understand ourselves and connect with others.
