Jason Adams- Artist Statement

Through the addition and subtraction of paint layers I link the concepts of building, destruction, and repair to the physical process of painting. I build the paint surface with translucent glazes to create a visual history, sometimes burying certain marks completely. These layers are then scraped and carved to reveal some of what is beneath the surface, mimicking my visual influences. Though the imagery is derived through the process, I am informed by things such as remnants of an old wall or a stain on a sidewalk. In all of these urban scenarios I see human construction subjected to the elements of nature, which reclaims a piece of Earth as a given building decays. Despite the downfall of a structure I find beauty in the details of this transformation, and hope beyond what can be built with human hands as nature takes over. Through an intentional use of ambiguous imagery I call attention to the process being presented and create an abstract moment for the viewer to reflect upon.
