Lois James – Artist Statement The transformation of wet slurry into a beautiful paper surface is part of the excitement I experience in making paper. When I am painting with paper pulp, I am striving for a unity between the base sheet and the surface images—a connection between nature’s image and natural fibers. The surprise of each brush stroke is part of the excitement of pulp painting. I have to remind myself that this is not manufactured paper—that each sheet will be different, that the light will glow differently on each area of the iridescence, that the several colors for the base sheet will be mixed differently in each vat, and that my hands do not always produce the same thickness in each sheet. It is a seductive and intuitive way of working and I am always excited with combinations of images. I explore sea creatures, fish skins, bones, tree bark, water movement and rock formations that I see up close at low tide and while walking. It is always amazing to see how images change when they are isolated from their surroundings. Sand dunes become waves, grasses become trees and tree bark becomes coral. It is this transformation that is so exciting. Resume Education
