Becky Holtzman – Artist Statement

In my paper, wood and found object sculptures, I merge natural and studio-made materials. I am interested in the synthesis of the natural and manufactured, and especially enjoy lending the illusion of gravity to paper. The humor and irony of making artificial “natural” objects is somewhat intentional; I see it as a way of addressing my fear that none of us spends enough time in wild places. But as someone who takes great comfort in the national forests, the southwestern desert, city parks and her garden, I confess that I am also shamelessly plagiarizing the things that I love, flattering nature with imitation.
