Linda Holland – Artist Statement
Alchemy, the process and the boundless potential for
transforming fibers to paper, initially drew me to paper
making. Through the years this potential has grown and paper
has become object: I have cast my handmade papers into
translucent volumes; translated traditional kite making and
bamboo skills to paper sculptures; and brazed and woven wire as
internal structures for paper cells or external structures to
contain paper objects. Recent material choices may also include
manufactured and found papers: I can liberate standardized
common objects into new incarnations, each unique.
Regardless of the techniques I might explore, I work intuitively,
responding to the qualities of the materials. In this way, my abstract sculptures emerge in a realm that spans two
dimensions to three, creating volume and impressions of mass by embracing space. Indeed, these sculptures may celebrate the space and shadows as much as the forms. Conversations improvised between color, texture, form and the inherent quirks of materials evoke energy and movement. Along the way, the work inevitably broaches that edge that flirts with the tension between balance/imbalance, much the way a jazz riff stretches from a simple idea to explore evolving possibilities.
