Gwyneth Scally - Artist Statement
The Forest
My work deals with our relationship to our biological bodies; this recent series also explores our relationship to the natural world as a whole. These images, taken from both northern regions and from Mount Lemmon, depict contemporary people wandering through forgotten mythologies. These are people lost in a forest of fading pine trees and inexplicable events.
In 2007, I spent the summer at an artist’s residency in Newfoundland, Canada. The dire beauty of the icebergs and pine forests compelled me to focus on the fragile ecosystems of the cold north. My current series explores humanity’s skewed relationship with nature, through allegories of displacement. In these works, schoolchildren linger on desolate cliffs, icebergs are displaced into fire pits, and an entire forest is now inside of a tent (rather than the tent being inside of the forest.) These works describe our romantic, escapist ideas of nature. Yet they also hint at the uncanny, and at something sinister, implying our growing ability to manipulate the natural world, if not to protect it.
