Gurpran Rau – Artist Statement

I am fascinated by the structures, patterns and repetition found in nature – they mirror the mapping and coding of invisible information stored within our bodies. Working on panel, I collage and layer silk-screen, digital, mono-prints, fabric and maps with encaustic medium, pigment and metal. The circular discarded machine parts embedded in the wax mimic our cellular structure. The soft, pliant and yielding qualities of the encaustic contrast with the hard and resistant metal, serving to create a whole. I typically use colorless encaustic medium to reference human skin and binding membranes, evoking bodily sensations, emotions, layers of history, and the passage of time.
