Joan Giordano – Artist Statement

“The moments of the past do not remain still.” “they retain in our memory the motion which drew them towards the future..... a future which has itself become the past.” Proust

In my current work, “Presences” I explore the enigmatic riddle of time. Drawing inspiration from archeological ruins and excavations that I sketched and photographed during recent trips to Turkey, Greece and Sicily, these “flags of the spirit” as the work has been referred to, bear witness to our transience and mortality while at the same time serve as the embodiment of the timelessness of art.

My working process involves repeated gouging, burning, rubbing and welding. The surfaces are dense and literally worked over. An emphasis on touch is integral to my work. For me, very often memories are evoked through touch and by fusing together the disparate materials used in my art I am collecting and connecting these experiences.
