Emily Clawson– Artist Statement

Wing series explores the textures, palettes and unique shapes that make up the wings of dragonflies, bees and butterflies. The wings are examined macro and microscopically. Under the microscope elements are found and documented to forge a visual language for the drawn and painted marks. Discovered elements are isolated and brought back together in new configurations within the art.

This work is an invitation to consider concepts of fragility and sustainability through exploration of a tiny world within.

Special thanks to the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers for their help and support during their butterfly show, and for providing butterfly specimens after their natural death and having been frozen, according to USDA protocol.
