Elizabeth Sheppell - Artist Statement

I love the physicality of painting and the process that defines it. I work in fields of saturated color. Color is what sets the tone for the paintings as well as texture, layering, and line. I work with many glazes of color and cut back into the panels. I want to convey a sense of push and pull using all these elements. The beauty of rich colors and the relationship of shapes to one another are integral in bringing the paintings together.

It is a mix of careful placement, intuition, discovery, and also studying the paintings to make decisions. I like working in a series of small panels that can evolve into a large installation or collection. The balance of one work standing on it's own as well within a group intrigues me to explore these possibilities. It can also give a collector an opportunity to build upon a collection easily.

Some of the paintings can evoke a sense of an aerial view point that can stem from land patterns from above. The works can be quiet, airy, while some are more complex and emotionally charged. I am always striving for that balance and exploration in the painting and in my daily life.
