Deborah Kapoor– Artist Statement

My recent investigations with encaustic are about seeking balance between the corporeal and the ethereal. I explore the potential for forms to embody immaterial processes like breath, mindfulness and prayer. Circles predominate, as symbols alluding to continuity, exchange and containment. Travel to India and study around Indian philosophy are sources I draw from to transform intangibles into material form.

The malleable potential of encaustic is infinite. I think of the waxen surface as a kind of skin – it holds, it protects, it is a sensory organ. Ultimately the tactile quality of encaustic encourages a more palpable experience of the invisible.
