David Hazlett – Artist Statement
I feel a deep connection toward things that have survived time and elements, and have emerged as beautifully reinvented forms. I have a collection of worn, found objects from which I draw inspiration. This collection acts as a link to my past, and as a point of departure for spiritual reflection and meditation. My intention is to show the ephemeral and the eternal nature of objects that exist in a deteriorated, rusted, or otherwise imperfect state.
The act of creating, destroying, and then recreating is an integral part of my process. I layer beeswax, tar, pigment, paper, and printed imagery on wooden or paper supports. I am drawn to materials that are minimally processed, and that have a close link to their source. I often scratch, layer, melt, stain, and polish the surface of a piece many times before it is finished.
When I am working in a calm space, I often encounter a metamorphosis where the image and the materials take on a distinct direction of their own. As a piece gains momentum, I often feel as if I give myself over to it, and something wonderful emerges. It is during these times that I have made my most authentic work.
