Eilis Crean– Artist Statement

The Votive Wall series references symbolic, ritualistic, spiritual, secular and philosophical issues associated with the practice of lighting of candles in public, private, individual and collective contexts. I am striving for a pictorial language where modes of description and allusion are interdependent. These are signifiers of the duality of the concrete and the sublime, the measurable and the infinite. The variety of objects act as metaphors for a range of human circumstance: loss and metaphysical presence, novelty and nostalgia appropriated from popular and material culture, specific individuals either private or publically known. The series is ongoing and open ended. The individual paintings stand simultaneously as autonomous independent wholes, and, as part of collective installations engaging the space to generate sanctuaries for remembrance, pilgrimage and renewal.

The paintings are each 30x40-inches, oil on canvas.
