Jason Butler– Artist Statement

My work begins with a longtime fascination between the straight line and curve. These lines are charged with qualities representative of my personal experience.

Straight; direct, efficient, prescribed, standard, constrain, insipid, control, symmetry, follow, rigid, utilitarian, sensible, practical, predictable, robot, banal, take for-granted, callous, unthinking, unbending, unwilling, immovable, insensitive, strict, dull, dry, behind, drab, tied, closed, inside-the-lines, demand, serious, tired, subsist, man-made, think, rational, duty, bleak, fleeting, shallow, superficial, popular, many, masses, mis-leading, security, asphalt, hard etc.

Curve; lyrical, eccentric, random, free, delicious, fun, unique, poetry, fly, twirl, bend, twist, spontaneous, musical, play, surprise, freedom, unique, imagine, create, fresh, lively, moist, new, nonsense, silly, exhilarating, human, forward, special, gestural, loose, random, open, exciting, enthusiasm, appreciated, outside-the-lines, color, whimsy, savor, flourish, organic, yearn, satisfaction, deep, once, individual, sweet, truth, genuine, dreams, elation, sublime, earth, heart, soft, graceful etc.

I enjoy working with steel because it is common and industrial, not a Fne-Art material. Bridge, train, skyscraper.

My sculptures are most comfortable standing in public spaces; campuses, parks and plazas where they may be chanced upon by anyone—out in the open.
