Tom Bright– Artist Statement

After studying photography and pursuing an avocation in that field, I began to work in the three-dimensional medium of fine furniture building. The images that attracted me in photography are present in the pieces I have built. I find a parallel in the two forms, with both reliant on clean geometric lines, the asymmetrical curves of nature, and the interplay of light on the subject. The furniture, like my photography, is a marriage of man’s endeavors and the natural world.

As a native of north Idaho I was surrounded by wood, wood that I saw as lumber for building houses and sheds, and for the fireplace. After coming to southern Arizona in 2000, I discovered wood that could become art. With my first use of mesquite, I was struck by its stone-like qualities and the tactile nature of the live edge. It has a seductive quality that encourages touch.

The help from two people has been invaluable to me, Joe Vercillo with his wonderful collection of wood and Scott Baker with his ideas and advice. Thanks to both.
