Beth Cumings Solem - Artist Statement

My art originates with the concept of code. From human DNA to computer programming, information and code have become the basis for understanding life. Code is the reality of all things material and immaterial. As I work, my mind invariably envisions the codes that create all that we are and experience as humans.

Biography

Beth Cumings Solem studied Art History at Iowa State University and St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge (England). She continued her studies at Scottsdale Community College and Arizona State in Architectural and Interior Design. She has studied studio art with many very talented artists including Peter Voulkos, Paul Soldner, Don Reitz, Chris Federighi (sculpture), Lari Pitman, Roy Dowell, Beth Ames Swartz, Holly Roberts (mixed media) and Judith Walsh (encaustic).
Currently, along with her art and design studio work, Beth is a collector of modern and contemporary art and continues to be active in supporting the arts, locally and nationally. She presently serves as chairman of the Phoenix Art Museum’s Contemporary Forum Acquisition Committee, where she has also served as a Docent for the past eleven years.
