Barbara Bergstrom - Artist Statement

Women, in particular, use their daily dress to place their signature on personal presence. As we package ourselves in clothing, specific messages are offered for interpretation to surrounding observers. Flippant or formal, our clothes represent layers of meaning and purpose with every snap, zip, and clasp. Using alternative media to create contemporary outfits, I use the language of materials to illustrate my observations of how we awkwardly show off, unconsciously pay respect toward tradition, or push to recreate ourselves through what we wear.
